Oral Cancer

Oral Cancer Screening: Early Detection for Better Health

Why Oral Cancer Screening Is Important

Oral cancer can develop in any part of the mouth, including the lips, tongue, cheeks, floor of the mouth, hard and soft palate, sinuses, and throat. Early detection is crucial for successful treatment and recovery. Our dental team is trained to identify potential signs of oral cancer during routine dental examinations.

Early detection of oral cancer greatly improves the chances of successful treatment and recovery. By incorporating oral cancer screenings into your regular dental visits, you are taking an active step towards protecting your oral and overall health.

Who Should Get Screened for Oral Cancer

  • Regular Screening: We recommend oral cancer screenings as part of your routine dental check-up, typically every six months.

  • High-Risk Individuals: If you have a history of tobacco use (cigarettes, cigars, pipes), heavy alcohol consumption, HPV infection, or a family history of oral cancer, you may be at a higher risk and should undergo screenings more frequently.

What to Expect During an Oral Cancer Screening:

  1. Visual Examination: Our dentist will visually inspect the inside of your mouth, looking for abnormalities such as sores, red or white patches, lumps, or unusual growths.

  2. Manual Examination: The dentist may gently palpate (feel) the tissues in your mouth and neck to detect any unusual areas or swelling.

  3. Advanced Technology: In addition to visual and manual examinations, we may utilize advanced technologies such as VELscope® or other screening devices to enhance our ability to detect abnormalities that may not be visible to the naked eye.
